The artist has donated the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the MVT, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's independent music venues.

The star was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release the album was chosen as the best record of the past year.

He has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages played in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, well-known musicians including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their admission fees, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from water damage, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained financial assistance in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and audiences.

"The concept that funds from performances in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

He is among several artists to donate his award funds to worthy causes.

When the band received the trophy in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman Cocker declared that the group would contribute their prize money to the charity the charity.

That year, musician she shared her bounty between a few charities, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they needed new equipment," the artist shared with outlets.

Two years ago, they contributed their winnings to the youth organization that supported their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And the 1994 recipients they gave their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was ample," said artist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected somebody else's life."

Recently, the MVT revealed it had protected several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The first in Southampton and the second in that location were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by a national body and music fans who purchase "shares" in the venues.
