As Beachgoers Ran From Violence, Viral Image Shows Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected cracking sounds ringing out around the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the hill soaked, she noticed someone moving up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that surely every instinct would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally full throttle racing.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and ambulance crews caring for numerous those hurt.
