In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series released last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. While the character's name a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. A new film inspired by a popular book aims to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The position was in essence a selection process with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country de facto.

• The shortlist included several politicians, among them an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• According to a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer familiar with the events stated the key criterion was controllability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the move to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by the actor's arrival as 007. The grittier version prompted local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an star popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. He is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to question.
